Shoreditch / Brick Lane, London –
A nightclub institution in London, Cargo is a live music and DJ venue that has remained at the clubbing forefront since its inception more than a decade ago.
Situated under three railway arches on Rivington Street, the club is designed to evoke a sparse cargo hold where light brown floor-to-ceiling bricks create a surprisingly warm and intimate atmosphere.
Most of the action takes place in the main room as gritty, dedicated music fans listen to bands and shake it up on the dance floor, though the venue also makes space for casual partiers who need a break from the crowds and noise.
Besides a dedicated “chill out” room, the club is full of various nooks and cubbyholes, a patio featuring art from cutting-edge luminaries like Banksy and Shepard Fairey, and a separate outdoor drinking area with an occasional tiki motif and heat lamps to ward off winter’s chill.
With wild theme nights, performances by well-known DJs, and a roster of artists from a wide range of musical genres, Cargo delivers a solid payload for clubbers of all stripes.
Laid-back, casual music fans, young professionals, and university students, 20s and 30s.
Live music of various genres during the week and an international mix of DJs on the weekends playing everything from Latin beats to drum and bass, break beats, and down tempo.
Monthly theme nights. Check the website for a list of current and upcoming events. Foosball table. Photo booth.
A canteen-style restaurant serves burritos, burgers, salads, and pizza. Lunch specials M–F noon–3pm.
Cover charge £10–£15/F–Sa after 10pm. Bar snacks £3–£6, lunch specials £5, entrées £7–£14. Beer £4+, wine £4.50/glass or £23+/bottle, cocktails £6+. Foosball table £3. Photo booth £3.
Funky casual: vintage jeans, t-shirts, colorful cocktail dresses, fun button-downs.
Fridays and Saturdays for the busiest scene, though the live bands draw a crowd every night.
The Shoreditch (145 Shoreditch High Street) offers a DJ-driven dance scene and live performers – with a little extra kitsch to boot.
