Shoreditch / Brick Lane, London –
Considering the cocktail bar, underground club, retro arcade, and innovative roof top, it’s clear that Queen of Hoxton is no typical East End boozer’s den.
Midweek the long concrete bar on the ground floor plays host to many artsy Shoreditchians, their woven fedoras tipped so they can read the cocktail specials on the chalkboard, as young-at-heart corporate types relive their student days – or maybe their parents’ student days – playing vintage pinball and foosball in the adjoining game room.
Burnt orange bulbs and fake ivy dress the ceiling, while exposed square pillars continue the industrial theme, offset by rotating art installations, window etchings, and mismatched wooden chairs.
Thursdays through Saturdays, the ground floor swells with debauched outer Londoners who show up to let loose to DJ-driven electro, while down in the shadowy basement bar, the schedule varies from electro club nights to eclectic live music and standup comedy.
The rooftop, meanwhile, is a veritable mecca in the summer, when weary city slickers lounge on picnic chairs in the fleeting sun or catch one of several evening outdoor movie screenings put on by the Rooftop Film Club.
Far from being a one-trick pony, Queen of Hoxton offers an innovative and diverse entertainment lineup that promises a royally good time.
East London arts and media clique, fashion students, groups of suburban commuters catching up for an after-work drink, eclectic music lovers, edgy artists, corporate types de-corpora-fying, and rowdier party crowd on the weekends, early 20s to mid-30s.
Arcade games including pinball, Leisure 2000, House of the Dead, a slot machine, and foosball table. Varied calendar of live music in the basement Mondays through Wednesdays. DJs spin house, indie, and electro on Fridays and Saturdays.
Standup comedy on some Wednesdays. In summer, Rooftop Film Club screens outdoor movies several nights a week. Rotating local art displays.
Small menu of fresh Italian-style pizzas.
Cover charge £0–£10 depending on event. Pizza £6–£8. Beer £3.80–£4, wine £3.60–£7/glass or £6–£25.60/bottle, cocktails £6.80–£7/glass or £28/jug, cider £3.60–£5.
Casual to creative trendy: suit trousers, pullover sweaters, duffle coats, cable knit cardigans, checkered shirts, red skinny jeans, satchel bags, heeled riding boots.
Any time there’s a live act of interest in the basement, or Thursday through Saturday nights for a house packed to capacity as DJs shuffle a mix of indie, electro, house, and dub step.
Any warm summer day on the rooftop to soak up some rays and enjoy the skyline.
Cargo (83 Rivington Street) is a full club and restaurant with diverse live music, sometimes followed by top DJs.
