Nice, French Riviera –
Patrons are greeted by a shark and a large blue whale at the door of the nautically-themed Blue Whales, one of Nice’s late-night bars where crowds typically don’t show up until 2am when other bars begin to close.
Though the bar is located inland in the old town, the underwater frescoes of marine life keep the casual and friendly clientele in a sea-faring state of mind.
While the upstairs area offers a quiet place for chatting, and shooting pool or chilling and smoking on the terrace, the downstairs bar is usually packed with people indulging in flaming shots and crowding around the stage to hear the live rock and jazz that goes on all night long.
Those looking for a rowdy night in a dive bar atmosphere will find Blue Whales the perfect spot for a wild late-night romp before hitting the beach at dawn.
Young and rowdy crowd after midnight, mostly 20s. Some older pipe-smoking types early evening.
Live music 11pm until closing, mostly rock and jazz. Pool tables upstairs.
None.
Beer €6, shots €4.
Casual.
After 2am when nearly everything else is closed. Most popular on the weekends.
