Skrillex Bio

Sonny John Moore, known by the stage name of Skrillex, was born in Los Angeles in 1988 and has since become a regular household name and one of the biggest artists in electronic music. He is best known for bringing the loud, hardcore dubstep genre (sometimes referred to by critics as ‘bro-step’) to the mainstream, culminating in five Grammy nominations in 2012 – including best new artist.

He began his musical career in 2004 as the lead singer of the emo-hardcore band From First to Last, releasing two albums and reaching widespread popularity. He left the band in 2007, and began to dabble in the digital music production scene. In 2010, he released his debut album, “My name is Skrillex”, for free on the internet.

He blew up onto the electronic music radar after being signed by deadmau5’s record label, mau5trap recordings, and began a worldwide tour with the legendary artist. The immense popularity of his following EP, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”, released late in 2010, solidified his standing as one of the world’s best electronic artists and producers.

Skrillex has since been headlining at the largest electro music festivals around the world, including the Electronic Daisy Carnival, as well as at major clubs in Vegas, Ibiza, and other major cities.

He has collaborated with others in the same heavy dubstep genre such as Nero and Knife Party, as well as with more house and trance artists like Porter Robinson and Kaskade. Skrillex’s most famous tracks include “First of the year (Equinox)”, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”, and his remix to Benny Benassi’s “Cinema”.

I have seen Skrillex live several times and he never disappoints. He is an incredibly talented producer and has made all types of music from rock to metal to electronic and dubstep. Within the Electronic genre he shows a wide range of talent performing music with a very upbeat dance vibe to dark grimy dubstep. Every song he produces is top notch, which is a rare quality to find in a musician. He loves his fans and is a kind person to any fan that wants to have a chat with him. I also love how he openly states that he is not in it for the money, I have even read tweets from him telling his fans that if they cant pay for his music, to simply find it for free somehow and enjoy. I definitely recommend attending at least one of his shows.

I was lucky enough to see Skrillex live in Montreal at the New City Gas venue. Having attended that venue many times before, of course skrillex had one of the most original introductions. He made his audience wait 5 extra minutes before entering the stage. Meanwhile a video on the screen behind the dj booth was counting down the time remaining. As soon as he lept on stage everyone was in a panic sreaming, shouting and fits pumping in the air. He is absolutley nuts as a performer but his music speaks for itself. His transitions were flawless and a hard bass was constant. What I love the most, other then the music, was how he didn't want a spotlight on him the entire night. He wanted the music and the lighting effects to shine through, rather then looking a man spinning. Needless to say, he is phenominal and so talented for someone who has just started. Definitely recommend seeing his show!

I think Skrillex is an incredible producer. Every genre, song, and sound he makes his own. He started out with his signature dubstep, with songs like "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites," and of course his classic remix of Benny Benassi's "Cinema," but in the past year alone he has grown so much as an artist. I have seen him in concert three times, at EDC, then Hard Haunted, and again at Hard Summer. At EDC he sucked - he was terrible at transitions and it was clear he had little live DJing experience. At Hard Haunted he was fantastic and you could tell he had been practicing. At Hard Summer, his show was nothing like Hard Haunted. He moved effortlessly from genre to genre, and his own songs just sound completely different now. Instead of just hard dubstep, he has stepped into reggae, trap, electro, and moombahton while still keep his signature sound. Some people give him slack for copying other genres, but I say shut up to the haters because Skrillex can generally do songs in a genre better than the founders of the genre, which is evident in his trap remix of Birdy Nam Nam's "Goin In." I can not not wait to see what he comes out with in the future.
