Robert Randolph Bio

Robert Randolph

Pedal steel guitar player Robert Randolph is best-known for leading the American funk and soul band Robert Randolph and the Family Band, though he also regularly performs solo.

Randolph learned to play the steel guitar at his church in New Jersey, and previously worked with jazz organist John Medeski in 2001 before fronting the Family Band.

Robert Randolph & the Family Band’s first album, Live at the Wetlands, debuted in 2002, but it was their follow-up studio album Unclassified (2003) that attracted the attention of famed guitarist Eric Clapton, who invited them to tour with him as a supporting act and who also performed on their 2006 album Colorblind.

The track "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" on Colorblind was subsequently featured on several NBC commercials, as well as in a promo for the Discovery Channel. The song “The Thrill of It” was also featured prominently on ABC during the network’s college football coverage.

Randolph is known for his high energy when he performs, often putting aside his instrument to dance or choreograph the crowd to dance with him.

Other popular songs include "Deliver Me," "Love is the Only Way" (with Dave Matthews), “Nobody,” and “Run for Your Life."
