The stage name of Steven Markowitz, Hoodie Allen is a hip-hop artist born in Plainview, New York in 1988. Not the typical rapper, Allen attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in finance and marketing, and eventually found a job at Google. Originally working with partner Obey City, Allen released the EP Bagels & Beats in 2009. After Obey City left the collaboration, Hoodie Allen, who picked up his nickname as a child, released four mixtapes, most notably Pep Rally in 2010 and Leap Year in 2011, that included singles like “Cake Boy” and “Fame Is for Assholes.” True to his geek roots, Hoodie Allen kicks up buzz on platforms like Twitter, SoundCloud, and Ustream. His fans happily join the Hoodie Mob, a grassroots group of promoters who draw attention to his shows.
