Diplo

Born in 1978, Thomas Wesley Pentz has made global hits as the Philadelphia-based DJ and producer, Diplo. He was once part of the duo Major Lazer and has produced for legendary pop stars like Beyoncé, Usher, and No Doubt. He co-wrote and produced M.I.A.’s 2007 debut single, “Paper Planes”, which quickly topped the US Hot Dance Singles Sales chart and made it to 4th on the Hot 100 chart.

Since the 2002 debut of Sound and Fury, Diplo has risen as one of the biggest producers and DJs in the world. He collaborated with Tiësto in 2010 on “C’Mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise)”, which shot up to the top of the UK Dance chart. Recognizing his rising success, Rolling Stone named Diplo as one of the “40 Reasons to be Excited About Music” in 2010. Along with a whole list of hits, Diplo’s track “Pon De Floor” for his Major Lazer project was sampled in Beyoncé’s chart topping single “Run the World (Girls)”.

Tickets to Diplo concerts tend to sell out fast. Live Diplo shows are celeb-studded events full of surprise guest appearances and an energetic crowd ready to dance until daybreak. Diplo has headlined international tours and has performed at some of the biggest dance music festivals in the world like Hardfest and Electric Daisy Carnival.

Diplo, Diplo, Diplo. Where to begin? Like many people, I was familiar with Diplo before I even knew his name through his production on MIA's first few albums including here hit "Paper Planes". I knew the beat to that song was something fresh, but I didn't know the love affair that it would precede. Major Lazer's album "Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do" further reassured me that Diplo was a name to watch, and watch I did. I saw him move from a relatively unknown DJ from Philly to a festival headliner, all the while staying true to his roots and incorporating new sounds and cultural styles into his productions. He is one of the reasons I got into electronic music, and is one of the reasons I am still in love with the scene. Whether he's playing trap or moombahton, dubstep or house, Diplo is the king of the party. Don't hesitate to let yourself get a little crazy when he's behind the decks.

Diplo is by far my favorite DJ. Every show he puts on is a crazy adventure from start to finish. While I often get bored at other DJs spinnig, Diplo always keeps his sets fresh with the newest electro, hip-hop, dubstep, moombahton, trap, etc. He also produces some of the dopest songs, like "Pon de Floor," "Look At Me Now," and "Que Que." I went to one of his free concerts at Santa Clara University and pushed my way to the very front with my friend. It should be noted that we are both 6 feet tall, and were blocking the view for many shorter fans. But we could not be moved. At the end of the set Diplo started throwing out dollar bills during the song, "I Make It Rain." I caught one, and when the set was finished I yelled at Diplo to sign my dollar. He took a sharpie out his suit jacket and signed it, and now I have a Diplo Dollar. He also likes to drop a lot of Nicki and RIhanna, which I always appreciate.
