Cake Bio

Cake

Cake is an alternative rock band made up of lead singer John McCrea, guitarist Xan McCurdy, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, bassist Gabe Nelson, and drummer Paulo Baldi. Cake’s music is influenced from everything from country music to Iranian folk music to rock and funk. McCrea formed Cake back in in 1991 when he moved to Los Angeles from Sacramento, but was soon forced to move back to Sacramento after initially finding little success. However, McCrea would eventually make his way back to L.A., where the modern incarnation of Cake began.

Cake decided on its band name not because they liked the delicious, age-old treat, but because they wanted to capture something that would “cake” – or stick – onto one’s shoe until they cleaned it off. Cake independently recorded and released its first album, Motorcade of Generosity, and it gained attention as one of the best indie releases of 1994. Fashion Nugget, the band’s second album, would go platinum behind the success of singles like “The Distance” and the cover “I Will Survive.”

“Never There,” a track on the band’s third album Prolonging the Magic, hit number 1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks in 1998. “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” (on Pressure Chief) hit number 7 on Billboard and was a popular music video on MTV.

Cake would go on to produce two more albums (B-Sides and Rarities and Showroom of Compassion) after the release of Pressure Chief. The band has seen a number of personnel changes, but has continued to tour and captivate audience and critics alike.

"He knows about your party...he is calling you....DUUUDDDEEE!!!". During my college days, every party I went to had Cake up full blast and everybody knew every lyric to every song. I still walk around singing their songs to myself: "Reluctantly crouched at the starting line.." and "I want a girl with the right allo-cations...". I don't know what specific genre you could classify Cake as...they have a little bit of rock...a little bit of reggae action...their music can get funky....and it can be folky...and anthemish. It always makes you wanna bounce around and will for sure put a smile on your face.
