Bars in the West Loop tend to fall into two categories: the ultra-trendy It Spots among Randolph Street’s restaurant row, and the old-school sports bars near the United Center.
As for the former, The Aviary is currently the neighborhood’s prized possession. Owner Grant Achatz is widely regarded as one of the world’s best chefs, and his cocktail bar showcases his intense attention to detail. Known for his work on the forefront of molecular gastronomy, Achatz creates drinks and small plates that are elaborate scientific experiments, ranging from black truffles imbued with gin to bourbon infused in a frozen egg. Less than a hundred lucky guests can frequent the space at one time, all of whom gain entry via an inherently equalizing same day email lottery.
Those who didn’t win the lottery can watch other winners, however: the Bulls and the Blackhawks. The two teams’ stadium looms over the neighborhood where so many local bars focus on sports. Among ancient dives, classy new spots like WestEnd attract yuppies and college kids, who can watch games and then dance to a Top 40 DJ at night. When the Blackhawks score a goal, an ear-splitting horn pierces through the rowdy crowd.
Refined or raucous, West Loop bars reflect the dual nature of the neighborhood; just a few blocks separate the high rollers of Randolph Street from the jersey-bedecked crowds around the stadium, and they all enjoy a good drink.
