The Museum of Contemporary Art is a non-profit organization and museum space located just off the Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago. The modest-sized gallery space features permanent and rotating exhibitions, and also hosts special events throughout the year.

The MCA opened in October 1967 featuring installations by Claes Oldenburg and Jan van der Marck, as well as Dan Flavin’s first solo museum exhibition. Performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art include dance, theater, lectures, and artist talks, all of which take place in the museum’s 300-seat theater. Other activities at the Museum of Contemporary Art include museum tours and a variety of nighttime events, such as the cocktail parties held for young art lovers on the first Friday of each month.

In addition to regular events, the museum offers seasonal or rotating events, including a summertime farmer’s market and special evening performances or gallery openings. The Museum of Contemporary Art also hosts family days, with specialized events intended to teach kids about the different styles and aspects of contemporary art.

Such a cool museum!

I have a friend who works for Jeff Koons in New York and so she insisted I go here while I was in Chicago! It’s kind of small in terms of museums but it’s really great for contemporary art fans. There are a few Jeff Koons pieces and Hiroshi Sugimoto stuff too, to name a few. I don’t pretend to understand contemporary art, but the trip to the museum did make me think a lot! The museum isn’t as big as the Science one or the Art institute but it has the quality if not the quantity!
An excellent modern art museum

The MCA is super cool. It's technically located in downtown Chicago, right off the Magnificent Mile, but for whatever reason it feels off the beaten path. The pieces they regularly show range from impressionist-inspired paintings to the ever-famous Calder mobiles to the increasingly bizarre sculptures and multimedia pieces. The curators are not afraid to push the boundaries of art, but they make every effort to clue you in to what makes each piece special. I've taken in exhibitions and talks (thank you very much, student card), and I have never been disappointed by an exhibit. I may have been confused, but isn't that what modern art is for?
Really great collection

With the shiny and new Modern Wing at the Art Institute, I worry that the MCA will lose some of it's foot traffic. And that would be a shame, because despite it's small size the MCA has a great collection of contemporary art that is definitely worth seeing. Their permanent collection is not particularly large, but it's pretty interesting (especially the Calder room they have). And the rotating exhibitions in the big first-floor gallery are really amazing. A few years ago they had a big retrospective of Jeff Koons that was absolutely incredible. The layout of the exhibitions is always very well done, with just the right amount of description to interest you without being boring or overwhelming. The gallery space is beautiful too, with a unique use of natural lighting via skylights that you don't often see in art museums. So if you want to visit the Art Institute, definitely do so. Their collection is really impressive. But for modern and contemporary art, the MCA pushes the boundaries, making for a really unique museum experience.
