Gold Coast, Chicago –
Located at the north end of the swanky Rush Street shopping district, Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse is a Gold Coast neighborhood institution that has been alienating the basic tenets of vegetarianism – and recommended portion size – since 1989.
Boasting ice-cold martinis, massive cuts of beef, and desserts that could double as road blocks, this bustling corner venue brings in a regular assortment of wealthy young couples, powerful local businessmen, athletes, and large groups of friends looking to splurge on a protein fix.
Averaging more than five-hundred meals a night, the 8,000-square-foot venue whirls with waiters swinging large cuts of meat in front of wide-eyed diners’ faces, a customary tactic to showcase the restaurant’s varied selection.
An elegant wooden bar in the front room welcomes local financial professionals looking to unwind with one of the over hundred and fifty wines, while the spacious dining area – a veritable sea of white-clothed tables – fills up quickly with foreign dignitaries being dignified and lively families celebrating birthdays.
Despite the Lamborghinis parked outside and the upscale shopping down the street, the patrons that flood Gibson’s each night range from older men in Armani suits to younger tourists in simple blue jeans.
For a nice lunch break while shopping in the area, or to celebrate a milestone over an extravagant dinner, Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse is the perfect option that never lets a carnivore leave hungry.
Young well-to-do couples, young professionals, foreign families and businessmen, groups of friends and families for birthday celebrations, and wealthy older regulars, late 20s to 40s+.
Live piano music in the bar, mostly soft jazz and classics.
Upscale steakhouse fare including steaks, chops, fresh fish, and lobster tails.
Appetizers $8–$30, lunch menu $8–$25, steaks $33–$50+, seafood $20–$46, lobster $75–$105. Beer $6–$12, wine $7–$21/glass or $20–$260+/bottle, cocktails $7–$20.
Upscale casual to cocktail attire: slacks and ties, skirts, cocktail dresses, nice jeans, blouses, polo shirts.
During the day for a more relaxed atmosphere, and Fridays and Saturdays for a boisterous steakhouse experience, though reservations are recommended.
Le Bar (20 East Chestnut Street Chicago) is a stylish and intimate lounge with lighter fare and intricate cocktails in the Sofitel Hotel.
