Bars in North Center / Roscoe Village Overview

Constellation - Theater | Concert Venue | Performing Arts Center in North Center / Roscoe Village, Chicago

Far enough from Wrigley to avoid being all-sports-all-the-time, North Center and Roscoe Village bars reflect the area’s laid-back yuppie vibe. One of the first sports bars at North Center’s border at Lakeview, The Globe Pub eschews Cubbie blue and red for the striped scarves of European soccer and rugby clubs. Sure, some bros might show up, but the crowd is more a mix of British ex-pats, travelers, and others who want to catch matches across the pond live.

Though North Center is no longer a bastion of Irish and German immigrants, decades-old shamrock-infused pubs and biergartens full of steins still sit at its corners. O’Donovan’s displays a century-old sign from its past in its back room, while, at the same intersection, Laschet’s Inn and Resi’s Bierstube have been serving schnitzel to generations of families. Shiny and new bars successfully capture much of the charm found at these mainstays; Brownstone may have the newest TV technology for broadcasting sports, but its décor has nods to the turn-of-the-century (the last one; not 2000).

A bit quainter than North Center, Roscoe Village has its share of historical bars full of gameday fans eating wings, from the Four Moon Tavern to the Beat Kitchen. Neither neighborhood has the cavernous and cold sports temples found in rowdier parts of town, but that’s what the cool and composed crowds want: friendly joints where they can grab a table with friends and watch the game—which just might be a European soccer match.
