Wrigleyville bars abound, so it’s a good thing that Wrigleyville restaurants follow in number. Something has to counter all that cheap beer, after all. Though most of the neighborhood’s sports bars serve up hearty pub grub, the neighborhood also has a surprising number of quality restaurants that have nothing to do with the Cubs or greasy burgers.
On the pub side, neighborhood veterans like Sluggers and newer sports bars like Vines on Clark have extensive menus of burgers, wings, pizzas, and other things that go great with booze. Some, like Johnny O’Hagan’s, serve up authentic Irish food to go with their authentic Irish owners and staff. Others, like Überstein, jump over to continental Europe with heavy German pretzels. Nightlife king Billy Dec has opened a Wrigleyville outpost of his Rockit Burger Bar, proving that burgers, beers, and sports fit in a trendy, clubby restaurant.
The neighborhood’s diverse population supports plenty of restaurants that don’t necessarily focus on what’s happening at Wrigley Field. Within spitting distance of the stadium, Uncommon Ground has made its name as one of the country’s best eco-friendly restaurants. Its hipster patrons, who might be more eager to hang out at a poetry slam than a home run derby, know they are getting serious eats from the talented kitchen.
Whether appeasing sports-related hunger or serving as a destination spot, restaurants in Wrigleyville are beloved enough to bring in crowds well into the winter.
