Oak Street Beach - Beach | Outdoor Activity in Chicago.

Party Earth Review It may be one of the smallest of Chicago’s lakefront beaches, but Oak Street Beach is also one of the most popular – and certainly the most upscale. Free Things to Do in the Gold Coast Overview

Pizano's Pizza & Pasta - Italian Restaurant | Pizza Place in Gold Coast, Chicago

The Gold Coast costs money; it’s right there in the name. Those who wouldn’t blink at plopping down credit cards at Barney’s or The Drake Hotel really don’t have a problem in this neighborhood. Mere mortals shouldn’t be discouraged, however. Sure, the only thing under $100 at Oak Street boutiques might be valet parking, and even entry into area clubs requires a couple of tens, but there are, indeed, free things to do in the Gold Coast.

The easiest way to have fun without money in the exclusive zip code is people-watching. Window-shopping along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street provides a glimpse into the lives of the very wealthy, and provided irritable shop clerks don’t interfere, checking out the outrageously-priced store goods is at least pretty educational.

A bit north, the scene at Rush and Division Streets is just as entertaining, though a bit less refined. An odd mix of flashy, loud, and slightly seedy that features a range of venues from the rowdy bars along Division to the fat-cat steakhouses on Rush, the streets around this intersection are always full of people behaving badly; always fun to witness.

In the summer, of course, the Gold Coast has one of the best examples of free fun in Chicago: the Oak Street Beach. One of the smallest in the city’s string of dozens of free beaches, Oak Street is an appropriate stretch of sand for this neighborhood. Nestled in the shadow of skyscrapers, this bit of beach caters to affluent types sitting quietly in their expensive swimwear and taking in the sun. Despite its airs, no admission fee is required.
