Wicker Park / Bucktown, Chicago –
Dinner, daily specials, freshly brewed beer, sports, and DJs – Moonshine delivers it all under one roof.
Except the dog-friendly patio – that’s outside.
This neighborhood favorite draws a diverse crowd for bites, beers, and Da Bears, especially when the Chicago sun peeks through and the sidewalk seating area fills with people-watchers and pitcher slingers.
The interior – formerly a grocery store – has a bit of a vintage feel, with shelves behind the pair of backlit bars weighted with whiskey, cordials, and cognacs, scattered dark wood tables laden with mojitos and margaritas served in mason jars, and stainless steel tanks churning out a half dozen rotating house suds.
Midweek is usually fairly quiet, with chill friends meeting up for a few rounds of whatever spirit (or hops) moves them, catching a game on the flat-screens, and gorging off the pub grub menu that includes pizzas, burgers, and a few southwestern kicks like tacos and fajitas.
Friday and Saturday nights mark an influx of rowdy barhoppers, some of whom do their best to dance to the mainstream DJ in whatever space they can find, while weekend days host the popular DIY Bloody Mary bar and its bevy of twenty-odd hot sauce options.
One could argue that the pub is suffering from an identity crisis, but Moonshine’s diverse appeal suggests craft beer, tasty cocktails, and fist-pumping over nachos might just be the perfect unifier.
Somebody call Congress.
Diverse mix of craft beer lovers, sports fans, boozy brunch hounds, groups of unpretentious friends, barhoppers, and local families, 20s–40s.
DJs on Wednesday through Saturday nights from 9pm stick largely to loud Top 40 and 80s cheese, with a little dubstep and hip-hop thrown in for good measure.
Several TVs throughout the bar tuned to sports.
Menu of American fare with southern influences including pizza, nachos, burgers, a few seafood dishes, and a handful of vegetarian options.
Traditional brunch fare on weekends until 2pm.
Appetizers and pizza only from 10:30pm.
Daily specials include $4 PBR Tall Boys every day, half-priced wine bottles on Wednesdays, half-priced pizzas on Thursdays, $5 classic margaritas and Stoli cocktails on Fridays, and a large DIY Bloody Mary bar on weekends from 10am–5pm.
Brunch menu $7–$11, sides $1–$5, appetizers $4–$13, sandwiches $10–$12, entrées $9–$19, desserts $5.
Beer $3–$9, wine $6–$8/glass or $24–$44+/bottle, cocktails $7–$9+, specialty drinks $7–$9/glass or $18–$28/pitcher, whiskey and other spirits $6–$10+.
Casual: jeans, polos, button-downs, jerseys, with a little dressier wear on weekends in the form of low-cut shirts and cute skirts on the ladies.
Fridays and Saturdays for the packed house and loud DJs or weekends for the Bloody Mary bar and sports.
Fatpour Tap Works (2005 West Division Street) has a larger beer menu, similar daily specials, pool tables, and more of an emphasis on sports.
