Bars in Avondale / Irving Park Overview

Hot Doug's - Restaurant in Avondale / Irving Park, Chicago

As Avondale and Irving Park slowly gain in trendiness, the neighboring hoods have quickly gained cool bars to go along with longtime favorites. All Avondale / Irving Park bars are similar, though, in their laid-back clientele, good drink deals, and friendly confines.

Some neighborhood pubs have been around since Prohibition. The Abbey Pub, sometimes the site of live music, and Chief O’Neill’s, site of the occasional wedding, always have Guinness on tap and real-life Irish proprietors shaking everyone’s hands.

Newer spots have sleek exteriors and shiny interiors, but they don’t have the attitude of spots in more posh parts of town. PitchFork Food & Saloon has a country-western theme, but the typical crowd is Irving Park yuppies and Cubs fans. Leader Bar looks like other post-college sports bars, but its pretty patio and commitment to airing MMA events set it apart.

Farther south, as Avondale bleeds into hipster haven Logan Square, bars tend to be more quirky and eclectic. SmallBar is—surprise!—a small lounge full of Etsy types, and Moe’s Tavern has instruments, including a drum kit, to claim on open mic nights. Popular Revolution Brewing Company in Logan Square gets its beer from the company’s Avondale brewery, which also serves up the insanely popular socialist-themed craft beers. And anyone who thinks that bars in Avondale / Irving Park roll up the sidewalk too early needs to find Late Bar, the area’s 5am dance-party.
