A spirited and ultra-feminine mélange of classic French and Jazz Age styles, Cuchi Cuchi, named for Charo’s trademark expression, is a charming and slightly kooky cocktail bar popular with fun-loving bachelorettes and birthday girls.
Bejeweled and feathered hostesses dolled up like flappers and showgirls usher the animated clientele into the front room, where gaggles of twittering college girls and chatty couples recline on plush floral couches or mingle at the bar, silhouetted by the light from stained glass windows.
Two dining areas fitted out with French tapestry chairs, chandeliers, and dramatic drapes feature eclectic touches like wall-mounted kimonos, photos of stars like Carmen Miranda, mannequins in period costumes, and a triptych of burlesque star Dita Von Teese, all fodder for conversation for the buzzing clusters of diners waiting for their shared dishes to arrive or having their tarot cards read.
Lively party groups usually gather in the Chico Chica Boom Boom room, where an LED table that changes color when touched provides entertainment between rounds and rounds of muddled fruit cocktails. Festive, cheeky, and over the top, Cuchi Cuchi is a sure bet for anyone looking for a little vintage glam and an excuse to break out the feather boa.
Trendy, fun-loving groups of women celebrating bachelorette and birthday parties, sociable couples on dates, gay men, and grad students, 20s to 30s.
Playlist of jazz and Latin music. Tarot card readings Tuesdays 7:30–10pm.
Small plates menu of international fare including fried artichoke hearts, scallops Provençale, and chicken Kiev.
Small plates $8–$23. Beer $4–$8, wine $8–$12, cocktails $10+, shots $9.
Nice casual to dressy: fancy tops and jeans/pants or elegant dresses for women, button-downs or polos and jeans for men, and the occasional loan of unique pieces from Cuchi Cuchi’s costume closet.
Busy every night, though Fridays and Saturdays draw the biggest crowds.
Asgard Irish Pub and Restaurant (350 Massachusetts Avenue) draws a similar crowd looking for a full meal before heading to Cuchi Cuchi for drinks and bites.
