Despite the prevalent stereotype that hotel bars are soulless affairs only intended for temporary guests, the historic Copley Square Hotel’s minibar has become a go-to for plenty of chic locals looking for a chill spot to start the night.
In the post-work hours, trendy Back Bay professionals claim the dark leather couches in the stark-white main room, rehashing the day over lychee martinis and a few signature Mini Burgers. Tall rows of dried reeds frame the couches to provide some privacy, but those looking for a more secluded nook can slip into a cozy adjoining space where earth-toned curtains dress the walls.
A minimal and modern décor of high-backed white leather chairs, scattered artsy prints, and bulbous lamps reminiscent of vintage jacks toys creates a soothing atmosphere, so even when warm weather beckons handsome couples and club-ready groups out to the tiny patio beside Huntington Avenue, most guests prefer to chill inside at the sleek bar, sipping classic cocktails to the beat of progressive lounge music.
Usually low-key throughout the evening, the venue is perfect for romantic nights and conversation, though the vibe amps up toward last call when riled revelers in slinky dresses and sparkly tops drop in from the local dance scene looking for a cool down.
minibar may be small, but it has big appeal to the trendy hotshots of Back Bay.
In keeping with the theme, minibar offers ‘mini’ bottle service – champagne splits or smaller bottles of alcohol served with your choice of mixers. And if things are going well with your date, you can order ‘The Overnighter’ package right off the menu, which includes a night’s stay at the hotel, a 1pm late checkout, and an ‘intimacy kit.’
Young professionals kicking back after work, trendy clubbers pre-gaming or winding down, romantic couples deep in conversation, hotel guests, and anyone looking for a classy and relaxed evening, late 20s to late 30s.
Soundtrack of lounge and techno music played at conversation levels. DJs set up on Mondays and Tuesdays and spin a mix of mellow house, reggae, and disco. Flat-screens behind the bar tuned to sports or prime time.
A limited menu of bar snacks and mini dinner plates, including signature Mini Burgers and flatbread pizzas.
No cover charge. Small plates $7–$14, flatbread pizzas $12–$15. Beer $4.50–$6+, cocktails $9–$12, wine $8–$18/glass, $28–$100)/bottle, bottle service $75–$250+.
Dressy: dark jeans, business apparel, collared shirts, pumps, curve-hugging designer dresses.
Any night at opening or closing to start or end a night out with Back Bay’s finest.
Storyville (90 Exeter Street), located steps away in the basement of the Copley, is a swanky New Orleans-inspired dance club that serves up inventive craft cocktails and shares a kitchen with its upstairs neighbor.
