Boston Thanksgiving Overview

On November 26, 1789, President George Washington proclaimed the first American thanksgiving celebration. The tradition has its roots in the 1620s, when the country’s early pilgrims recognized the Puritan holiday with a hearty feast, but G.W. was the first U.S. leader who recognized it as a national holiday.

Today, Thanksgiving has become the centerpiece of fall Americana. Millions of citizens gather with family and friends and load their bellies with turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, and all sorts of savory treats while watching football and drinking beer.

Cities across America host a slew of Thanksgiving parties that complement social gatherings like gravy complements mashed potatoes. In 2018, Thanksgiving in Boston offers fun turkey bashes at bars like The Bell In Hand Tavern.  This pub is widely considered Beantown’s oldest and houses the requisite amount of history to celebrate this centuries-old holiday.

Boston also boasts a variety of Thanksgiving shows that hint at another magical season. Taking place at Citi Performing Arts Center, A Christmas Story, The Musical affords holiday celebrants the chance to join Ralphie in convincing everyone around him that a BB gun is the perfect Xmas gift.

Additionally, Boston is full of beautiful, historic public spaces like the Boston Common and Boston Esplanade, where Thanksgiving activities like pick-up football games, strolling in park, and jumping in the leaves are the norm.

No matter which way you slice your pumpkin pie, it’s hard to beat Thanksgiving in Boston. Don’t miss your chance to pahhhty haahhd after downing as much turkey as your stomach allows.
