Boston Summer Solstice Overview

The Egyptians first celebrated Summer Solstice as the beginning of the Nile’s flooding season, and it has been commemorated as a meaningful astronomical event ever since. Every June 21, Boston kicks off the summer season and recognizes the Solstice with a variety of special outdoor festivities.

One Summer Solstice party is Make Music Harvard Square, featuring 75 local bands that play of a variety of music genres such as rock, blues, r&b, Latin, gypsy, folk, and jazz. The free music festival usually attracts about 10,000 attendees that range from music-lovers to those simply exploring the square.

Additionally, Summer Solstice in Boston 2018 offers a variety of events for the whole family. The Summer Solstice Celebration provides an afternoon of music at Lapham Peak State Park, featuring performances by Tom Klein and The Front. Meanwhile, Smith Gilbert Gardens hosts the Summer Solstice Picnic, an evening full of great food like hot dogs, side dishes, chips brownies, beer, and family-friendly activities such as badminton, corn-hole toss, and croquet.

History buffs enjoy the Summer Solstice Stroll, a guided tour of the Hancock Tower, Boston Public Library’s Civil War Exhibitions, and Old South Church. For athletes, the 2018 Summer Solstice Sprint Triathlon provides a unique evening race that includes a quarter-mile swim in Lake Singletary, a 10-mile bike loop, and a 5K run as the sun sets.
