John Coltrane Memorial Concert Description

John Coltrane was a revolutionary jazz musician who taught the world how to “love supreme.” Since 1977, Boston’s greatest living jazz musicians have come together on a Saturday in November for the annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert at Northeastern University’s Blackman Theatre. Sponsored by the Friends of the John Coltrane Memorial Concert, this memorial is the world’s oldest tribute to both the musical and spiritual legacy of the artist who was once worshiped as a god before being canonized as a saint in the African Orthodox Church.

Every year, the John Coltrane Memorial Concert remembers the jazz artist’s “giant steps” through musical performances. Local jazz musicians featured at the memorial concert have included legends like Pharoah Sanders, Bill Barron, Cecilia Smith, Yusef Lateef, and Frank Foster. Take in the live music by jazz virtuosos and discover the continued legacy of Coltrane’s music in contemporary jazz.

Tickets to the John Coltrane Memorial Concert start at around $30 for students, $35 for general admission, and about $40 for VIP passes. After celebrating the genius of John Coltrane, check out his living legacy at work in Boston’s bustling jazz clubs.
