Back Bay, Boston –
From early week house parties to gay nights to Top 40 mash-ups that bump everyone (who can get in) into the weekend, RumoR is a theater district staple for an international crowd of young clubbers.
Run by the same folks behind Cure, District Lounge, and the adjoining Venu, the club features two dance floors featuring blocky white pillars, shiny banquettes, creamy paper lanterns, and a general design aesthetic that’s equal parts minimalism and Victorian chic.
Bars in both rooms keep the pricey drinks flowing and – like at any club – the crowd can vary based on the night. Gussied-up gay boys shake it to house music on Wednesdays, EDM fans let loose on Thursdays, and Euro jet-setters join Boston’s scenesters on Fridays and Saturdays for dance, Top 40, and house mash-ups.
Spying a mysterious Middle Eastern sheik huddled by the VIP tables as girls in backless dresses vie for attention isn’t out of the ordinary on any night.
Music can also vary between rooms, so if one DJ isn’t cutting it, patrons can sometimes escape across the hall to check out the nearby scene.
Anyone in Converse and a t-shirt will quickly be turned away by one of the five bouncers – all notorious for being less than friendly to those who don’t make the cut – highlighting the notion that RumoR’s see-and-be-seen air is anything but hearsay.
Slick-haired Euro tourists, trust-fund kids, fashionable ladies, gay boys looking to dance, the young, and the restless, 20s to early 30s.
DJs normally spin Top 40, house, and dance mixes most nights, with slightly more emphasis on house during the gay night on Wednesdays.
Occasional reggae nights on Sundays. Check venue calendar for schedule.
Projection screens behind the DJ booth loop vintage videos and other assorted artistic displays.
No food. Coat check. Venue available for corporate events and private rental.
Cover charge $20–$25, cheaper in advance with guest list; RSVP on venue website. Beer $8–$10, cocktails and rails $10–$15, bottle service $300+. Coat check $4.
Dressy chic: button-downs, designer jeans, little black dresses, fashionable clutches, red patent peeptoe heels. No flip-flops or sneakers allowed.
Every night can have its own scene, but anyone wanting to ogle hot male dancers would be wise to hit the club on Wednesdays, while Fridays and Saturdays see the biggest regular weekend crowds.
Pigalle (75 Charles Street South) is a swanky French eatery good for filling up on haute cuisine before hitting RumoR.
