Happy Hour in the Back Bay Overview

Max Brenner - Café | American Restaurant in Back Bay, Boston

As a neighborhood that was submerged in water until the nineteenth century, it’s fitting that Back Bay has a variety of watering holes where the after-work crowd and city dwellers flock.

Though Beantown bars are not legally allowed to refer to drink specials as "Happy Hour" due to a 1984 law prohibiting discounted liquor sales in an attempt to curb drunk driving, venues have learned to use creative marketing to attract hungry deal seekers who known that Happy Hour in Boston means cheap food.

The Globe Bar & Café and McCormick & Schmick’s use clever names like “Bar Bites” and “Social Hour” to showcase specialty pricing on yummy munchies like homemade potato chips, buffalo chicken sliders, and margherita flatbread. Or check out the $5 oyster specials at Summer Shack and shuck like crazy.

Since cheap drinks aren't easy to come by in Back Bay, at least the social scene is worthwhile. The professional crowd in this part of town is filled with lawyers, business owners, and venture capitalists who are likely to open a tab using their black AMEX cards.
