Admiralspalast Information

Admiralspalast - Concert Venue | Theater in Berlin.

Admiralspalast theater is one of Berlin’s most famous and well-preserved variety theaters, located in the Mitte district.

Opened in 1910, Admiralspalast originally served as a 24-hour indoor fun park with a skating rink, cinema, cafés, public bath, and bowling alley. After World War I, it turned into a revue and operetta theater. After World War II, it housed the Berlin State Opera and continued to house performances of revues and operettas.

Admiralspalast, located in East Berlin, was also the site chosen by the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Communist Party of Germany for their vote and merger into the Socialist Unity Party of Germany or the East German Communist Party, which governed East Germany from 1949 until 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Events at the Admiralspalast have included the musicals My Fair Lady and Mel Brooks’ The Producers, in addition to concerts by Beyonce, De La Soul, Solomon Burke, Death Cab For Cutie, Rufus Wainwright, CocoRosie, and Antony & The Johnsons.

The main theater of Admiraslpalast has a 1,600-person capacity at floor level, or in the two levels of ringing balconies. The venue also features a smaller studio space with a capacity of between 400 and 800 people.

Beyond the S-Bahn bridge on the right is the former Haus der Presse with the cabaret theatre "Die Distel". In the courtyyard at the back stands tha Admiralspalast, built in 1910 as a swimming baths and skating rink. After 1955 it became home to the Metropol theatre. This is the very building in which the merger of the socialist SPD and communist KPD parties of Eastern Germany was forced through in April 1946 to create the socialist Unity Party. The admiralspalast was reopened in August 2006.
