The SO36 is a live music club that opened in the late 1970s in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. It gets its name from its historic postal code in which the SO stands for Südost (South East).
The site on which S036 stands has a long history. In 1861 it opened its doors to the public as a beer garden and stayed that way until the 1920s when the Cinema at Heinrichplatz, a 660 person theater, opened in its place. The building went derelict in the 50s and 60s until it was taken over and squatted in by a group of artists in the early 1970s.
In 1978 a Dead Kennedys performance at S036 turned the venue into THE punk club in Berlin. Other notable visitors around this time included David Bowie and Iggy Pop.
Today S036 is both an event and live music venue. Recurring events at SO36 include, My Ugly X dress up party, the Night Flea market, Roller Skate Disco, and neighborhood bingo.
Concerts at SO36 have included performances by such bands as, the Levellers, Faith No More, The Streets, The Offspring and Frank Black.
Capacity at SO36 is around 600 people.
