Astra Kulturhaus, named after and sponsored by Astra beer, is the largest live club in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district. It’s located at the abandoned site of an old railroad repair complex in a converted red brick factory building.
The building, dating back to before World War II, was originally used as a community center, before re-opening as a music venue in 2009. It still retains a communist chic appeal with 70s style lighting, wood-paneled ceilings, old-fashioned crystal chandeliers, retro furniture and wallpaper, and hardwood floors.
Past concerts at Astra Kulturhaus have included performances by Belle and Sebastian, Ben Harper, Vampire Weekend, The Specials, NOFX, and Busta Rhymes.
Capacity at Astra Kulturhaus is 1,500 in the main hall, but an additional 500 people can fit in the foyer. There is also an outdoor beer garden.
