Berlin Summer Solstice Overview

First observed by the Egyptians as the beginning of the Nile’s flooding season, Summer Solstice has been celebrated as a meaningful astronomical event ever since. Although Berlin’s Summer Solstice can occasionally be windy and rainy, there is no livelier place to commemorate the longest day of the year and kickoff to summer.

Every June 21st, Berlin commemorates Summer Solstice with Fête de la Musique, an entirely free, open-air music festival that originated in Paris in 1982 and is recognized around the world. With more than 90 participating music venues around the city, Fête de la Musique in Berlin features an eclectic mix of music genres including jazz, reggae, punk rock, electronic music, classical choirs, and orchestras. Musicians most commonly perform on open-air stages during the day, and by night, the party moves to indoor venues such as theatres, clubs, and churches.

In addition to Fête de la Musique, there are many other Summer Solstice events in Berlin. For instance, Turkenmarkt is a budget-friendly outdoor market that offers a variety of vegetable, desserts, fabric, fish, handmade tools, and artwork. Meanwhile, Fotofestival Berlin showcases talented, varying work by some of the world’s best aspiring photojournalists. Celebrants who’d prefer to be outside head to Strandbar Mitte, a fun Summer Solstice beach bar in the middle of the city that provides a unique, sand-covered dance floor.

Whether it is listening to free music at a hot Berlin venue, shopping outdoors, or simply enjoying the multitude of street performers throughout the city, Summer Solstice in Berlin offers something for everyone.
