WEST BERLIN –
Everything revolves around the music at A-Trane, a classic Berlin jazz club where cigarette smoke fills the air and subtle bass beats resonate throughout the room.
A handful of small red tables surround the stage in this intimate venue, where no seat is more than fifteen feet away from the musicians.
With its polished brass railings and wooden accents, the room exudes a certain elegance and class, while the simple, understated stage – gussied up with just a few colored lights and a red-and-blue curtain – places the focus squarely on the performers.
Fortunately, the musicians at A-Trane are up to the challenge: the club books up-and-coming stars as well as occasional big names, as evidenced by the many autographed portraits of jazz greats that adorn the walls.
The small space and its stellar entertainment attract a sizable upscale crowd of jazz lovers, especially on the weekends, so it’s always a good idea to call ahead and reserve a table.
Or patrons can just stop by, settle in on a comfy leather couch, grab a cocktail, and let their thoughts drift to the brilliant music that’s bound to come.
Sophisticated jazz lovers, 20s to 40s.
Live jazz nightly. Open jam sessions on Saturdays after the show – patrons can bring their own guitars if they want to join in. The musicians often stay for the jam session, which can be an amazing experience.
