Kreuzberg / Neukölln, Berlin –
Located in the scenic historical center of Neukölln, Café Dritter Raum (Third Room) has been championing local politics, serving up fresh breakfasts, and enabling a little retro video game action since 2009.
The bright and cozy café, with its old-school wooden bar, tired but comfortable sofas, and small wooden tables, was designed as a public living room – complete with an ancient, long-dead TV – far away from the cramped two-room apartments where most Berliners reside.
Weekdays see a diverse bunch of multi-ethnic Neuköllnians stopping in to sip coffee or local brews over robust vegan and vegetarian meals or a big English breakfast – which has enough carbs and grease to cure any hangover – and to listen to low-key beats amid discussions of consumer society.
The biggest draw is the all-you-can-eat brunch buffet on weekends, when the line of starving bohemians, progressive expats, and in-the-know tourists extends out the door in anticipation of the grilled vegetables, fruits, salads, and American-style pancakes that await inside.
The venue’s community involvement is evident during the regular Tauschring, a goods and services exchange that occurs most Wednesdays, though pretty much any grassroots organization knows it can host its meetings and events here.
A functioning Super Nintendo tabletop keeps guests busy between progressive action, making Café Dritter Raum an ideal room to fill the belly, change the world, and save a princess or two.
Relaxed crowd of local alternatives, bohemians, multicultural Neuköllnians, politically savvy students, and young families, 20s to mid-40s.
Occasional unscheduled concerts; check website for details. Ambient low-key reggae or dub beats all other times.
Regular Tauschring community exchange event most Wednesdays; check website for schedule.
Occasional clothing swap last Thursday of every month. Check with venue to verify.
Frequent progressive community meetings and events.
Regular, albeit randomly scheduled, movie nights. Sunday nights feature regular screenings of German crime drama Tatort.

Cafebar Malso Malso (Böhmische Straße 14) is a little less rough around the edges décor-wise, has a healthy à la carte breakfast on weekends, and serves up lots of cheap organic red and white wine to a similar crowd.
