Friedrichshain, Berlin –
Patrons who want a glimpse of the future – at least as it looked in the 1960s – should head over to Astro Bar, whose outer-space décor and glossy plastic furniture is a delightful tribute to the Jetsons and their dog Astro, for whom the bar is named.
Scattered old-school electronics, metallic robots hanging from the walls, and vintage Atari paraphernalia set the tone for this eclectic watering hole.
The back room is particularly cool with its sleek, modern black-and-white chairs and psychedelic red lighting, while the front room tempts patrons to play with the robot figurines that line the high-luster shelves.
In the early evening, a covered outdoor area serves as a meeting place for a funky international crowd that sips cocktails and watches as hordes of people slowly fill up Simon-Dach-Strasse.
At 10pm the outdoor seating closes and the focus shifts to the small dance floor inside as DJs provide mood music for the good-natured crowd.
The outgoing staff, mellow vibe, and central location of Astro Bar all add up to a charming and intimate spot to spend an ‘out-there’ evening.
International, alternative, and liberal, many students, 20s and up.
A DJ spins rock, indie, and garage every night from 10pm.
