Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) Information

Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) - Museum in Barcelona.

Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, affectionately known by locals as the MACBA, is located at Plaça dels Angels, 1, in Barcelona's Raval district. In 1986, Barcelona City Council commissioned architects Richard Meier & Partners to design this contemporary art museum despite the controversial fact that the museum had no collection to house before its construction.

The building itself is designed to contrast the collection of older buildings that surround it while still suggesting influences from the modernist style. It allows for plenty of natural light for internal lighting. The permanent collection at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona contains artwork from three major periods: forties to sixties, sixties and seventies, and contemporary. All three periods focus heavily on Spanish and Catalan artwork.

In 2007, the Study Center at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona was opened, which allows free public access to the museum's books, publications, and archives. Publications by Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona include exhibition catalogues, books, critical essays, and digital publications that can be accessed via the museum’s website.

Lectures, seminars, guided tours, and other events at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona are very popular, while temporary exhibitions are constantly changing and can be viewed on the museum's website.

Great place to relax

Hungover and don't want to make the trek to the beach? Wandering through the maze that is the Raval and want a place to relax and soak up the city? The MACBA offers skateboarders a chance to work on their craft and passer-byers an opportunity to admire them. While the museum itself houses exhibits expressing various forms of modern art, perhaps no artform truly captures the identity of Barcelona's youth better than the show the talented and daring skaters display on a daily basis. The plaza behind the museum offers plenty of space to sit down and read a book, take some photos, or drink a beer - all while watching one of the best free shows in Barcelona.
Absolutely stunning....if you like modern art.

A must for modern art-lovers. The museum building is a gorgeous, super modern facility with big ramps extending down through all the rooms and looming, stark concrete walls everywhere. Exhibits are always changing, so if you haven’t been in Barcelona for awhile you definitely will want to check it out. The plaza outside is nothing spectacular but great for people-watching. I especially loved that there were a ton of skaters pulling tricks and the staff were calling out compliments when they landed a trick instead of chasing them off. Word to the wise: if abstract art makes you want to kill someone, do not enter.
