Party Earth Icebarcelona Review

The Scene

"Anyone who suffers under the sweltering Spanish sun may find the perfect remedy at Icebarcelona on Barceloneta beach._x000D_

Anyone who suffers under the sweltering Spanish sun may find the perfect remedy at Icebarcelona on Barceloneta beach.

Overheated patrons are guided into a vault-like room, which is kept at a temperature of minus 12˚C year round, where they are then handed silver arctic-style jackets and gloves. Once thoroughly protected from the cold, guests are invited to drink a vodka cocktail or mixer from a glass made of ice.

In fact, true to its name, Icebarcelona is made entirely of ice, including the walls, bar stools (with their little fur coverings), the bar itself, and some glacial sculptures that include Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia and a family of towering eight-foot polar bears.

The clientele is largely made up of international travelers and groups looking for a bit of novelty, so they rarely stay longer than it takes to finish the complimentary drinks.

Nevertheless, Icebarcelona offers an unusual, fun, and refreshing experience and is certainly worth a visit – and with a comfy terrace right on the beach, the bar also provides a prime place to linger and warm up again afterwards.

Once the Icebarcelona patrons have finished their pitchers of cocktails, the terrace is usually taken over by a trendier local crowd that gathers to enjoy the sea breeze and their drinks before hitting the clubs.

Tip from Adriana:

Since you get a free drink with your ticket, you might as well order one of those delicious expensive cocktails rather than a tiny vodka shot! If you’re too cold to finish it inside, you and your drink can always slip out to the terrace.

  • Crowd

Curious passersby, tourist groups, and students in the Ice Bar itself, beachgoers and pre-clubbers on the terrace, 20s and up.

  • Entertainment / Music

Sub-zero temperatures during the sticky Spanish summer. Occasional special events with DJs.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

    None.

  • Prices

Ticket €15, includes one drink. Beer €3.50, vodka €5, cocktails €8.50+.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

    Casual.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Go around 10 or 11pm for an unusual way to warm up – or rather cool down – for an evening in Port Olimpic.

Icebarcelona: A One-Of-A-Kind, One-Time Place

This reservation-only beachfront bar sounds like a great idea in theory, but the cool factor wears off almost as soon as you set foot into ice-covered bar area. Eerily similar to a large, square restaurant freezer, everything from the walls to the drink glasses are mad of ice. Upon arrival, bar-goers are given large, silver parkas and gloves to brave the icy cold, as the room is chilled to a constant 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Pants, however, are left out of the equation, so if you’re a club-ready female who’s dressed to impress, your bare legs are bound to suffer. Elaborate ice sculptures decorate the inside of the bar and per the Barcelona nightlife tradition, house music is the norm. Tourists are what keep this bar in business, and most end up leaving after their first complimentary mixed drink. To put it simply, Icebarcelona is one of those bars you only go to once, just to say you did (and for the pictures that will inevitably surface on Facebook soon after). While touristy, Ice Barcelona is located on the beach, Ice Barcelona is just a hop, skip and a jump away from some of the cities trendiest nightclubs. While the 15 euro price tag may be steep for some, it will no doubt be a great start to the night.
Check it out once

I have been to the ice bar in London and also Icebarcelona and they are essentially the same. You stand in a giant freezer wearing a big coat for as long as it takes for you to drink one drink, and then you leave. Icebarcelona is right on the water and has an outside bar as well as the ice bar. You pay a huge cover to get in but it includes one drink. Then they give you gloves and coats and you head in and order drinks. The room is fairly small but you won't really want to stay in for longer than one drink. There are some beautiful engravings on the walls and ice sculptures. I love that the glasses are made of ice. I think this is the kind of place you go once and then don't need to go again.
Definitely a sight to see!

Icebarcelona isn't like anything I have ever seen before. Upon your arrival, make your way to the back of the swanky, upscale patio outside, buy your entry ticket for 15 euros at the bar (or buy your ticket from http://www.icebcn.com/ to save a few euros!), get your Icebarcelona-branded winter coat and gloves, and make your way to the Winter Wonderland that is beyond the sealed door. At first, Icebarcelona was a little overwhelming with its flashy club lights and light electronic music, but it was very easy to settle in and enjoy the unique atmosphere! The glasses are made of ice, so be careful! I broke mine about 4 sips into my drink and spilled it everywhere, but that didn't stop me from having a good time and observing the ice sculptures and the company of tourists!
