Circuit de Catalunya Information

Circuit de Catalunya - Race Track in Barcelona.

The Circuit de Catalunya is a motorsport racetrack located at Mas “La Moreneta” PD 27 in Montmeló, Barcelona, Spain and was built in 1991, the same year it began hosting the Spanish Grand Prix. During the 1992 Olympics, the Circuit acted as a start and finish line for the road team time trial cycling event, which was one of the more notable events at the Circuit de Catalunya. Due to the shape of the Circuit de Catalunya, overtaking is frequent at the slipstream and the long straight; however, the long straight is followed by a sharp turn which allows for the leading car to create turbulence, making it extremely difficult for the following cars to pass. The track was redesigned in 2007 to include chicanes, or moveable barriers, but this did not help to increase overtaking.

Races at Circuit de Catalunya include Formula One races, Moto GP races, and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup preliminary and qualifying races. Previous drivers at Circuit de Catalunya include Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, and Michael Schumacher. Fernando Alonso was the first Spanish Formula One driver to win at his home country's track in 2006.

Racing schools at Circuit de Catalunya are available for anyone who is able to drive a manual vehicle and focus on risk prevention when racing. Potential students at Circuit de Catalunya racing classes much meet minimum height and weight requirements. Guided tours of Circuit de Catalunya are offered at 10am and 12pm daily but are limited and subject to availability.

Crucial for all Formula 1 fans to visit

Although it may be 32km (a 30 minute train journey) in-land from the city centre, I can assure you that Circuit de Catalunya is worth the ride. Upon arrival at the train station Maçanet Massanes (Line R2 from Passeig de Gracia), you needn't worry about using a map to find the track. The sound alone of the engines of the cars will lead you there, even though it is a 20 minute walk! The track is huge, and can be seen from many different angles on the premises, but the best view has to be from the Grand Stand. On site, there are food and drink stands, souvenir shops and many different Formula 1 cars to look at and have photos with. Even though a Formula 1 Grand Prix race can be a pricey ticket, there is always the option of going along to a test day, where many of the Formula 1 drivers will be driving round the track testing out the new cars. On this day you are able to access all areas apart from the VIP and Members sections. Tickets for this are available on their website or on the stall on La Rambla for between 15-20€. One recommendation I do have is for you to TAKE EAR PLUGS. They WILL be needed, and although they are on sale at the Circuit, they can be quite expensive.
