Barri Gòtic, Barcelona –
Tucked away on a side street in the Barri Gòtic area is a little red gem called Sugar.
It’s all about the cocktails at this sweet bar, and the list of specialties written in chalk on the ceiling are well worth the neck strain.
Sugar’s simple but enticing décor of baroque murals, erotic artwork, and twinkling lights contributes to its laid-back, funky atmosphere, while crimson-cushioned window seats and intimate red lighting in the bar area lend an air of intrigue.
A buzz of energy permeates the room as people chat excitedly over tasty piña coladas and the pumping music – and the tight space means that there’s plenty of mingling going on.
With its nightly Happy Hours, eclectic bar tunes, and great location, Sugar is a perfect place to warm up for the clubs, especially during the week when it’s one of the more reliably busy hangouts around the Gothic Quarter.
Chatty locals and travelers, 20s to 30s.
A mix of sounds on the stereo, including rock, pop, funk, rap, hip-hop, and old-school dance tracks.
Happy Hour daily 8–11pm.
Beer €1.50+, cocktails €5+, shots €2.50.
Casual.
Friday and Saturday nights are guaranteed to be lively, but Sugar also has a great mid-week vibe.
Right next door is Sugar’s twin bar, Sub Rosa, which is equally cool with its kooky artwork and Gothic vibe. The crowd is more international, but the mojitos are just as expertly mixed.
