Poble Sec, Barcelona –
Just a quick walk south of Barcelona’s famed alternative concert hall, Sala Apolo, the funky factory-turned-lounge maumau attracts a diverse set of creative-minded denizens thanks to its always comfortable vibe.
Seeing as the place is run by the same guys behind maumau underground – an online guide to the city’s top alternative happenings – it’s little surprise that the venue is a favorite of artists, cool cat students, and a variety of music fans, but it also serves as an eclectic haunt for anyone just looking to kick back with a few cocktails.
The expansive interior features an assortment of low white couches along one side of the open room, separated from clusters of banquettes and simple wood tables and benches by thick columns that extend up to the high ceiling.
A small bar in one corner serves a tidy selection of specialty gins and vodkas, as well as traditional classics and – this being Spain – a mojito or two, which regulars often enjoy pre- or post-Apolo concert or during one of the short film screenings that are sometimes projected onto one wall.
The cavernous but cozy maumau is usually a destination for conversation, perfect for patrons who want to critique the rotating art on the walls, dish over the latest music, or chat up the staff about the city’s next great underground show.
Artists, musicians, cultured young professionals, music fans, movie lovers, and those interested in keeping their fingers on Barcelona’s alternative pulse, 20s to late 30s.
Ambient playlist of mostly 1920s–60s-era music.
Short film screenings every other Thursday from 8:30pm.
Occasional art exhibitions.
Simple bites like hot dogs and nachos.
Maumau membership card available, which provides users with discounts both at the bar and at several venues/events throughout the city.
Hot dogs €2.50, nachos €1.50. Beer €1.50–€3, wine €3, cocktails €5–€11.
Artsy-chic to trendy: jeans, t-shirts, flannel, blazers, funky jackets, vintage wear, cool cocktail dresses, heels.
Any night to check out the artsy scene.
Sala Apolo (Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 113) is an animated club and live music venue that is packed virtually every night with the city’s young rebels, rockers, and ravers. Concertgoers regularly pre-game at maumau.
