Plazas in Barri Gòtic Overview

Jamboree - Club | Flamenco Bar | Jazz Club | Live Music Venue in Barri Gòtic, Barcelona

Barcelona has plazas ranging in size from the enormous Plaça Espanya to tiny corners tucked away all over the city. The Gothic neighborhood is no exception, with a multitude of plazas that offer a variety of activities for tourists and locals alike.

Plaça Reial, located right off of La Rambla, bustles 24/7 as popular restaurants, clubs, and hostels attract people from all walks of life. A famous Barri Gótic plaza, the square features Gaudí’s earliest known work, which illuminates the fountain in the center.

The most impressive plaza in Barri Gótic might be Plaça del Rei, which is nearly enclosed on all sides by gothic buildings since this is where the royal palace sits. Not to be outdone is Plaça Sant Jaume, from which Barcelona’s current government operates and which is the constant center for protests and cultural activities. The most notable of these activities is the "castellers," or human towers, that take place during La Merce, the most important holiday in Catalonia.

Barri Gótic’s most secretive square, Plaça Sant Felip Ne, is tucked away behind the Barcelona Cathedral and is notable for a number of reasons. The site of a civil war bombing that killed many children, this square is now the backdrop for a preschool as well as a scene in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona.

The numerous plazas in Barri Gótic offer tourists the chance to see some of Barcelona’s most recognizable landmarks or get away from the action while still surrounding themselves in history.
