Apr 3, 2013 —  The world loves an underdog. Just like your favorite comic book heroes, plenty of global spots were known for their adversity-filled formative years before bursting onto the scene with a new look and attitude.

Dodgy hoods are often knocked by the general public the same way that Peter Parker was picked on at school. But deep inside every disparaged district, a Spider-Man is lying in wait, getting ready to set things right.

Boston’s Jamaica Plain might be considered sketchy by some, but others see the opposite. The area’s growing population of artists, students, and musicians, along with its funky bars and unique cafés, give reason to call it Beantown’s Brooklyn.

Likewise, Brixton in London might spook some people because of its unrefined aesthetics and history as a riot hotspot, but the neighborhood boasts budget-friendly shops and intimate music venues that would be silly to miss due to the stigma surrounding the area.

Don’t be afraid to give gritty city zones a shot. Like Wolverine, Captain America, and The Hulk, they can overcome stereotypes. You’ll be happy with what you uncover.
