William Shakespeare – you may have heard of him – wrote dozens of plays during his storied career. Many of those works were performed at the Globe Theatre, a three-story, open-air amphitheater that housed 3,000 excited spectators.
It’s debatable whether Shakespeare’s works were celebrated more posthumously than while he was living. What’s not up for discussion, however, is that masterpieces like Romeo & Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream benefited from being performed outdoors. Today, Europe boasts a packed list of eclectic outdoor arts festivals that feature not just theater, but also dance, artwork, musical performances, comedy shows, and much more.
Not too far from the Globe, Londoners are treated to the E4 Udderbelly Festival every April through July. There, guests come down with an incurable case of the giggles while enjoying outdoor performances by some of the U.K.'s leading creators of comedy.
Meanwhile, Uitmarkt Amsterdam offers Dutch denizens a chance to up their artistic I.Q. by viewing innovative exhibitions by thousands of artists. Over in Madrid, the Dcode Festival combines music and cutting-edge visual displays to create an atmosphere that awakens the eyes and ears of Spaniards every September.
The Globe Theater was rebuilt for a reason. Taking in art outdoors enhances the senses with the help of a little fresh air.
