May 10, 2013 — With Baz Luhrman’s spin on The Great Gatsby coming out in theaters today, you might have America’s most legendary romantic on your mind. No, not Leo DiCaprio, but fictional Jay Gatsby, the self-made American millionaire.
Gatsby believed so firmly that he could recapture the past with his long-lost love Daisy Buchanan, he bought a mansion across the bay from her and threw countless, wild parties in the hope that she’d show up. Alas, we all know how this story ends. It’s safe to say the showboat route wasn’t the best idea.
Jay would have had better luck if he’d simply shown up at the Buchanans and plucked Daisy from Tom’s hypocritical grasp to take her on a speakeasy tour of New York City. While house parties are often hit or miss, speakeasies are consistently suave, secluded, and seductive.
More importantly, speakeasies offer couples like Gatsby and Daisy a chance to shack up in an intimate booth, sip on specialty cocktails, and whisper sweet nothings into one another’s ears. Though mansions offer many hidden rooms, nooks, and crevices, those domestic haunts don’t match the dreamy ambiance of an underground gin joint.
While most people can only hope to be half as classy as the great Jay Gatsby, everyone can learn from his mistake. Speakeasies are the best place to rekindle an old flame – or get the wood burning for a new one.
