Jan 14, 2013 —  Everybody loves a party, but sometimes you just want to chill out, and that’s where the many wonderful U.S. cafés come into play.

Cafés across the country run the gamut from grungy artists’ hangouts to high-end Euro imports, but the vibe is universally relaxed and casual. And you can rest assured that there’s probably one near you right now.

There’s the trendy café scene in Los Angeles, where everyone’s a beautiful actor or model waiting for their agent to call over café au laits. Then there's the gritty San Francisco cafés where hardscrabble poets scribble in notebooks and talk philosophy. Or there's the funky fun neighborhood cafés in Washington, DC where everyone who is not involved in politics goes to get away from it all.

It doesn’t matter what city you find yourself in, be it New York, Boston, Chicago, or Po-Dunk Nowhere Town, you’ll probably find a U.S. café down the block with a table ready. And maybe a dude strumming his guitar in the corner.

What are your favorite cafés in the U.S.?

I could live at Joan's on Third for their finger sandwiches and mac & cheese alone. Great cheese selection, incredible coffee, and lot's of pastries. Also love The Little Next Door - good place for some wine during the day...if you drink wine during the day.

Joan's on Third for amazing ANYTHING - grilled cheese is sick, turkey meatloaf - awesome, chicken salad always good etc.etc. I've ordered cheese platters from them and they've done an exceptional job pairing exotic choices with marcona almonds, fig jam and crackers. The desserts are really good too - personal favorites are the red velvet and coconut cakes. They also get major points for carrying Martinelli's apple juice.
