May 23, 2016 —  Over the past few years there has been a lot of talk about the benefits of cannabis for human health. The use of marijuana for medical purposes is now legal in many states (and the number keeps growing). Now that it's becoming less of a taboo to use cannabis for medical and recreational purposes, the “war on drugs” may be coming to an end and it's time to remind ourselves some of the healthy properties of cannabis for mankind:

Pain Relief

Medical marijuana is most often used for pain relief. The main reason for this is THC, the ingredient of marijuana which has pain-relieving abilities.

According to studies, THC works by activating some parts of the central nervous system, which serve to block pain signals on their way to brain. Because of that, cannabis shows very good results when battling against nerve-related pain. Of course, there are other ways to kill the pain, and they often include opioid painkillers. However, the thing about these opioid painkillers is that they can have some very negative side effects, and this is the main reason why most of the people, including famous athletes, choose to use cannabis instead of opioids.

If you have migraines, rheumatoid arthritis or MS pains, then marijuana may just be the thing you need, because it is most helpful with these problems.

Also, there is a long list of people experiencing nerve pain (patients with HIV, alcoholics, people who'd had amputations or spinal surgeries). These people have also managed to lower the pain using medicinal marijuana.

A Canadian study from 2010 reports that marijuana had much more of an effect when compared to aspirin with patients suffering from above mentioned issues. Medicinal marijuana is used very carefully, because doctors don't want to harm their patients, and their main goal is to reduce the pain.

Cannabis Can Help You Regulate Your Metabolism and Lose Weight

Studies have shown that diseases such as obesity and diabetes are far less common among the marijuana users, than people who don't use it.

One of the benefits of marijuana is that it also has the ability to regulate your metabolism, so this means that you'll not only be more skinny, but happier and healthier at the same time! And why is this? Well, cannabis has the insulin-regulation role, and it enables your body to manage the injection of the calories, too. Professor Murray Mittleman of Harvard Medical School stated that “users of marijuana appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than non-users."

Help Cancer Patients

Among many other benefits, cannabis also helps people with some very serious health issues.

There is some firm evidence that shows medical cannabis and cannabinoids are successful in pain relieving and appetite boost. Also, it can treat some states of organism that can be very exhausting, such as nausea and vomiting. For example, ever since 1980, people with cancer have been using pills that contained a mixture of THC and other substances exactly against the above mentioned syndromes. Another thing must be mentioned when we talk about cannabis: it is very effective when combined with chemotherapy. The main reason for this could be that cannabis improves the sleep of patients, and this could come in pretty handy, because during sleep, organism regenerates itself and the whole body relaxes. That is the reason that nowadays in many countries, cancer patients from all around the world tend prefer to buy cannabis seeds and grow their own medicine.

Cannabis Can Help Treat Serious Addictions

It is already a widely-known fact that cannabis is much less risky than alcohol and many other addictive substances, but not many people know it can also be used for such reasons as curing different types of addictions.

As we talk about dangerous and highly toxic substances (like heroin, cocaine, tobacco, etc.) it is well known that they can cause very heavy physical addiction. Additionally, it can be very difficult and painful when addicts try to fight their conditions, and escape the world of substance abuse. Although it is true that under some circumstances cannabis could be a habit forming substance, it is completely unharmful because it doesn't cause any pain when someone wants to stop using it.

Many people who addicted to cocaine, alcohol and other serious substances, use cannabis in order to quit their addiction. For example, people using opioids suffer great pain when they go through treatment, and cannabis can be used to relieve these symptoms. Also, studies show that it is much better to use cannabis than many other toxic substances.

The most common addiction, alcoholism, has some of the heaviest withdrawal symptoms. Millions of people around the world are facing alcohol problems, and it is estimated that these withdrawal symptoms kill one out of three sufferers. Marijuana helps alcohol addicts in one specific way - marijuana maintenance. This basically means that people substitute alcohol with marijuana. It is much better that way, because there is no real threat of overdosing, and there are minimum chances of causing physical addiction. Marijuana also helps by reducing the high level of aggression which is often connected with alcohol addiction.

There are great chances that domestic violence and child neglect are going to be significantly lowered in those areas where people use cannabis instead of alcohol.
Of course there is a lot of ongoing research exploring the possibilities of medical cannabis. It is certainly not easy to say if the results will be positive, but there seems to be an overall optimism in those who work closely on the matter. Let's wait and see if the future holds more surprises from the once considered sacred plant of cannabis.
