OCCII Information

OCCII - Concert Venue in Amsterdam.

The Onafhankelijk Cultureel Centrum In It, known simply as OCCII, is a concert venue located just south of the Vondelpark, the biggest park in Amsterdam. With roots in the squatting movement, the building was first squatted in 1984 and then legalized in 1989.

Predominantly run by volunteers, the OCCII is the premier venue for the alternative and independent scene, showcasing hardcore punk and experimental electronic music. Past events at the OCCII include benefit shows, weekly parties, and music concerts by such acts as the Shining, Zounds, Lowdjo, and Bassculture.

Around the OCCII, there are a number of community spaces, including a café, restaurant, library, and theater for children.

Only for the grimy grommet punk lovers!
Amster M. Dec 9, 2012
A great place for alt rockers, punks, and subculture lovers that search for studded spots off the beaten path. They keep the gritty music going at least three times a week, they keep the distortion loud and unlawful, and they keep the look dingy and hip. They've got some really odd stuff going on here at times, and most of it will never cater to the mainstream tourist, but that's exactly what makes the place so rad. Their endless roster of obscure punk bands coming from around the world makes for a really fun and laid back show, the place itself is really good at accepting the grimy grommets, with pride.
OCCII rocks!

OCCII is located just across the street from the south entrance to Vondelpark and if I were to describe it using only one phrase, that phrase would be "face-meltingly awesome." That being said, it is not for the faint of heart. My eardrums were ringing for the next three days, but it was all worth it. I went for White Lung, a Vancouver, BC band that my friend was a fan of, but was able to catch the two openers, Diferent (hardcore skate rock from Buenos Aires, Argentina) and F***IN' PISSED (Dutch hardcore). The speakers were LOUD, the bar was LOUD, and the dancing was INSANE (the bathrooms, however, were surprisingly clean and adorned with framed sheet music). If you're not prepared to mosh, or if you'd rather not get shoved into a mosh pit, then hang out at the back and hang out with the older punks, folks who have been going to and who may have even played this venue back in the '80s and '90s. Otherwise, throw your lot in with the crazies and prepare for a wild night! If you're a punk, or if you want to learn about what punk means to the Dutch, then you absolutely need to check out OCCII.
