Added as an extension to Amsterdam’s music hall on the Ij River, the boxy black Bimhuis is one of the most beautiful and upscale jazz venues in Europe.
Besides the perfect acoustics, the club offers an intimate and snazzy setting in which to enjoy the top-notch musical talent that performs to packed houses each week.
Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a romantic view of the city center as warm amber lighting casts a gentle glow over the patrons in the cozy red theater seats, their attention captivated by the magic happening on the glossy wooden stage.
Between sets, guests move to the spacious bar and lounge area for a bit of refreshment and mingling.
On any given night, Bimhuis attracts a diverse clientele, though student nights bring in the liveliest and most informal crowd, while the well-known acts draw a more sophisticated group of jazz lovers and musicians.
Either way, the stunning décor, incomparable view, and stellar music that the Bimhuis offers is ideal for those who want to experience the high-end side of Amsterdam’s arts and culture.
Everyone from jazz lovers to socialites, depending on the act, 20s and up.
All types of jazz, from smooth contemporary and experimental improvisation to upbeat swing and a capella scats. Musicians vary from well-known international groups to local legends and start-up student groups.
A café next to the stage offers a unique menu of delicacies including oxtail soup, warm salmon vinaigrette salads, deep-fried tempeh in soy sauce with noodles, asparagus with lamb fillet, and goat cheese ravioli with tomatoes and basil.
Concert tickets €12–€14, free Tuesday nights. Appetizers €5.50–€7.50, entrées €13.50–€18.50. Beer €2, wine €3, mixed drinks €6.50+.
Casual to smart casual.
Varies depending on the music/artist. The free student jam sessions on Tuesday nights bring in locals from around the city and international students from the music conservatory.
Bimhuis is part of the “Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ” (Music Building on the Ij River), a large and beautiful work of modern architecture that houses a number of upscale music venues. Star Ferry, a café located on the ground floor of the building, offers light food and drinks on its terrace dock.
