Kunstvlaai: Festival of Independents Description

The Kunstvlaai: Festival of Independents is the biggest celebration of independent art in Amsterdam. Held each year at the Sint Nicolaas Lyceum in Amsterdam, the Kunstvlaai features the best in non-commercial art and experimental innovations. Over 70 museums, galleries, and collectives throughout the city take part, offering art lovers the chance to take in work by about 250 artists from the Netherlands and around the world. For 5 days from the end of November to the beginning of December, more than 12,000 visitors pass through Amsterdam’s participating exhibits.

The Kunstvlaai: Festival of Independents is hosted by progressive spaces throughout the city like 1646, the Center of Experimentation and Information in Art, Foam Lab, Milk, and the Zolder Museum. Exhibits showcase rising stars and emerging artists with titles like “Film & Video Art in Norway, 1960-90,” “Art in Okinawa: Fragmented Images of Okinawa & the Internalized Other of Japan,” and “Street By Street, Block By Block: A Dialogue with Jeremiah Day, Roel Griffioen and Taf Hassam.” Dutch and international artists highlighted at the Kunstvlaai have included Dwight Marica, Jan Robert Leegte, Aline Weyel, and Emilia Bergmark.

Tickets to the Kunstvlaai: Festival of Independents start at around €9 per day, while festival passes to all five days cost about €17. Early tickets and online passes offer the best discounts, so get yours as soon as possible. After soaking in the art, imbibe some inspiration at the cafés and bars nearby in Amsterdam.
