Standing side-by-side on the periphery of Leidseplein, Weber, Kamer 401, and Lux are a trio of bars that may be similar in shape, style, and clientele, but each has a slight twist in character that sets it apart from the others.
The identical floor plans feature a long, narrow three-room design with the main bar on the left, an intimate lounge platform behind the bar, and a few steps up, a larger seating area with sleek sofas.
The décor at Weber tends toward a woodsy yet chic cabin feel, with elegant chandeliers illuminating the dark wood mantels and the trophy game mounted against the cool greens and rust oranges of the walls.
On the flip side, Kamer 401 aims to bring more disco to its vintage style by adding leopard prints, crushed velvet, and tassels to bar stools and couches as well as sexy, shiny bead dividers and flashy metal designs, while Lux goes for the cool and contemporary look with sheer curtains, plush lounge pillows, abstract designs, and oversized photos of models set against bold blue and red walls.
Regardless of the vibe and décor, any of the three venues is suitable for the talkative and somewhat upscale clientele that gathers to catch up with their trendy co-workers and fashionable friends.
Although there are three bars to handle the crowds, the trio always seems to burst at the seams with patrons sipping cocktails both inside and out on the streets – which turns out to be the best place to mingle as all three bar crowds blend together into a hip mini block party scene.
With a buzzing atmosphere and a carefree and pleasant mentality, Weber, Kamer 401, and Lux offer a lively sample of the modern Dutch bar scene.
A blend of musicians, actors, mod foreigners, and students, mid 20s and 30s+.
All three cafés offer a similar music style of indie pop hits and upbeat electronic dance tunes. On weekends, Lux hosts live DJs who spin a mix of popular tracks from the underground independent scene.
Bar snacks include Dutch cheeses, sausages, and olive platters. Hotel Weber is located above the bars and offers studio rentals for weekends and week-long stays.
Bar snacks €5. Beer €2.40, wine €3.20, mixed drinks €6.70.
Casual to smart casual.
Wednesdays through Saturdays after work or later in the evenings.
