Housed in a 17th-century building, Harry’s Bar is a sleek and simple Spuistraat bar consisting of three small floors, each with its own pleasing ambiance.

The bar is located on the ground floor, an animated area great for people-watching. The second floor is a small perch above one end of the bar and provides a bird’s-eye view of the masterful drink making below. The third floor offers a lounge setting with leather couches and a view overlooking Spuistraat.

Throughout, bold prints of French pop art add a dash of color to the dark wood accents, beams, and winding staircase.

Of course, what the well-heeled clientele really comes for is the impressive cocktail menu, which includes a long list of classic martinis and inventive mixed drinks.

A patient and professional bar staff in crisp white dinner jackets takes excellent care of the patrons, who lounge at tables and on sofas to enjoy their perfect concoctions amid a soothing, intimate buzz of conversation.

Tip from Adriana:

Harry’s Bar is not affiliated with the famed Cipriani family and their upscale venue of the same name in Venice, Italy. However, the Harry’s Bar in Amsterdam also provides a sophisticated cocktail experience – especially on the third floor, where guests can sink into one of the comfy leather sofas or lounge chairs and enjoy a view of the city’s old and beautiful Dutch architecture.

Across Spuistraat to the left is Dante, a café and restaurant with a spacious people-watching terrace for summer and cozy interior for winter.

Kid of the oddball, but a nice look
Amster M. Dec 4, 2012
Harry's seemed like an oddball spot to begin with -- not because the place was strange or anything. In fact I liked it, it had a great view on the top floor and the bar was beautiful. But it just didn't seem to have the right shape to fit the location. I could see Harry's as the kind of bar connected to a five-star hotel for example: highlighting its classy look and warm attitude to customers. I wouldn't say their cocktails are to die for, but it was the look of the place that drew me there. I think others loved the drinks, but I guess for me since it was in a tourist hub the character just couldn't step outside the tourist look. Maybe they'll re open with a new face.
