Though the historical portraits and antique chandeliers may create the illusion of an old-fashioned Dutch pub, patrons shouldn't be fooled by appearances.
Café De II Prinsen is a lively bar and attracts a young college crowd that comes every night to let loose, meet new people, and have a good time. Even though there isn’t much room inside, the no-frills bar’s continuing popularity as a hot hangout is perpetuated by the constant word-of-mouth campaign passed from student to student.
Dark lighting and loud music form the backdrop for the high-volume conversations, usually conducted on foot since the bar’s smattering of barrels-turned-tables are mostly pushed to the side.
Luckily, at least in nice weather, patrons can pour onto the sidewalk and find a bit more elbow room at the tables on the terrace.
The young scene attracts its share of bubbly, fun-loving girls, though groups on a “guy’s night out” do tend to dominate. As in any student bar, a bit of pushing at the bar is to be expected, but overall the vibe is upbeat and the outgoing crowd is ready to party.
For those who happen by in the afternoon, Il Prinsen is also a good spot to take a break with a beer and a sandwich.
Unlike most brown bars that carry generic pilsners, II Prinsen has both Leeuw Pils and Wit, a pilsner and sweet amber from the Leeuw Brewery in the Southern Netherlands. Besides that, the place is lively and perfect for meeting folks who can fill you in on certain Amsterdam scenes you might not know about.
