For all the bars that populate Amsterdam’s drinking landscape, it’s the brown bars that truly standout as the most beloved of local watering holes. Named for their 16th- and 17th-century-era smoky wooden interiors – brown bars are at the center of the city’s nightlife drinking culture.
But there are also loads of new and trendy bars in Amsterdam whose chic décor and more sophisticated vibe cater to an upscale clientele as well. As casual drinkers enjoy the local Heineken, Amstel, and Grolsch beers at neighborhood spots, a more “see and be seen” set heads to swankier bars in areas like Jordaan and Rembrandtplein for the latest mixology concoctions.
Amsterdam also caters to a diverse scene that includes artsy, underground hangouts in addition to historic spots, jazz bars and whiskey bars all over the city.
Amsterdam bars run the gamut from dives and neighborhood joints to sports bars and wine bars – catering to all types and all kinds throughout the entire city – and whether locals and visitors decide to walk, drive, or ride their ever-present bikes to the bars, rest assured the music is always playing, the people are always welcoming, and the doors are always open late.
