In Philadelphia on July 4th, 1776, the American Continental Congress – made up of patriots Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams, among others – officially adopted the Declaration of Independence and subsequently severed ties with Great Britain. Two days later, bells, bonfires, and fireworks followed the first public readings of the historic document.
For over two hundred years now, America has celebrated the 4th of July annually with fireworks and as much pomp and circumstance as possible. A Capital Fourth: America's Independence Day Celebration epitomizes the prevailing spirit of liberty with an unrivaled and televised fireworks display that follows musical performances by some of the most renowned musicians in the U.S.
Past acts at A Capital Fourth: America's Independence Day Celebration have included Phillip Phillips, Matthew Broderick, Kool & The Gang, and the Academy Award-winning John Williams.
A Capital Fourth: America's Independence Day Celebration takes place annually on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC and is free and open to the public. Gates open at 3pm, and attendees bring their own food, drink, and picnic blankets, as well as footballs, baseballs, and gloves. Alcohol is strongly prohibited at A Capital Fourth: America's Independence Day Celebration.
