DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON, DC –
A plane-free way to take a culinary trip, Cities Restaurant & Lounge brings in flavors from exotic locales and serves them up in a classy restaurant the size of small village.
The menu’s themes – highlighting four different cities – change every four months, so sophisticated foodies can revel in a menu that might include Cuban chicken, Greek salads, Peking duck, and good ol’ District mac and cheese.
Business types and policy wonks stop in for a prix fixe lunch with clients during the day, as shop-ready ladies and cosmopolitan young professionals gather around rows of steel tables or settle in at the massive U-shaped bar to catch up over a Happy Hour that runs from noon till 8pm.
A relaxed spot to enjoy a romantic dinner during the week – especially with the alluring videos of the featured destinations streaming from flat-screens on every wall – the venue picks up on Fridays as DC’s finest show up to sip pricey cocktails and make eyes at the wealth of eye candy.
Yet even when 10:30pm rolls around and a DJ starts spinning Top 40 and house, most people mix and mingle rather than dance, preferring to lounge on the long rows of ostrich-hide couches and earth-toned banquettes and wonder where that sexy someone’s accent is from.
Transporting DC’s glamorous set to fabulous cities far and wide, Cities Restaurant & Lounge offers an international experience in the heart of an already very international city.
Wealthy businessmen, high-fashion types, upscale couples, pundits and lobbyists, and young socialites who prefer a less shoulder-to-shoulder and more sophisticated lounge environment, late 20s to mid 30s+.
DJ spins Top 40 and a mix of house on most Fridays and Saturdays from around 10:30pm. Live jazz on Wednesdays. Flat-screens encircling the room showcase images of the menu’s featured cities.
A fusion of flavors from rotating featured cities around the world, as well as American classics like New York strip steak, sliders, and mac and cheese.
Outdoor patio. Private room available for rent. Happy Hour M–F noon–8pm.
Small plates $8–$14, salads $10–$17, entrées $17–$31.
Beer $7–$13, wine $9–$13/glass or $35–$200+/bottle, cocktails $11–$14. Bottle service minimum $500 w/table reservation (frequent promo specials on venue website). Valet $10 (W–Sa from 6:30pm).
Upscale and trendy: suits, designer jeans, button-downs, skirts, sexy dresses, heels.
Any day for the prix fixe lunch specials and a classy crowd of Washington workers, Wednesdays for Ladies’ Night and $2 champagne all night, or Friday and Saturday nights for a busy scene that still leaves room to breathe.
Shadow Room (2131 K Street NW) attracts a similar crowd looking for a more traditional high-end club scene.
